Cardiff Council Books ISG In For Library Refurbishment

ISG is continuing to build on its increasingly strong presence in South Wales after being awarded a contract to modernise Radyr Library by Cardiff Council. The contractor has previous experience delivering a similar project for the council at the Grade II listed Cathays Library.

The programme will see ISG carry out a complete upgrade of the library building, which was originally constructed in the 1960s. The library will be closed to the public throughout the duration of the project until the building is handed over in spring 2012.

Two elevations of the original building will be extended outwards creating additional library floor space, with this increased capacity used to accommodate a new community room facility and an enlarged and more accessible entrance to the library. Additional building enhancements include the provision of two new disabled toilets (staff and public) and a number of new access ramps.

Space within the existing building will be reconfigured and rationalised to increase overall capacity and the programme of modernisation sees ISG comprehensively refurbish and redecorate the building. New, highly efficient mechanical and electrical services will be installed throughout the building and improved cavity wall insulation will enhance the library's energy efficiency performance. Externally, the contractor will re-roof the structure and replace all the windows with modern, high performance glazing.

ISG's John Rawlinson, managing director - South West, commented: "Libraries continue to play a vital role in communities and Cardiff Council must be commended for continuing to invest in its local infrastructure. The Radyr Library modernisation will not only directly benefit library patrons, but also underlines the council's commitment to the environment and its ambitions to enhance efficiencies across its entire property portfolio."
