The Big Tick award is the first level available to entrants of the BITC's national Awards for Excellence, the UK's most influential, independent, peer assessed corporate responsibility awards. Each year there are on average 350 entries.
The Awards for Excellence reward businesses who demonstrate the positive impact they have had on society and also the business benefits created by ensuring that being responsible is integral to their business model.
CEMEX's Patrimonio Hoy (translated, savings/property today) programme allows low income families in Mexico and Latin America to obtain access to services and building materials through a well-planned savings and credit scheme. To date more than 260,000 families have improved their housing and living conditions and it is estimated that the scheme has impacted on more 1.25 million people.
CEMEX has also entered the 'International' category for the Award for Excellence, being one of seven entries put forward, demonstrating they have a positive impact on one or more of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
"We are pleased to receive the Big Tick recognition and to have been short listed as an Example of Excellence by Business in the Community. CEMEX has demonstrated a long-term commitment to sustainable development and corporate responsibility by collaborating with others to make the greatest positive impact on the world. Access to housing is one of our priorities and through Patrimonio Hoy we have contributed to improve the living conditions of over 260,000 families across Latin America." comments Lorenzo H. Zambrano, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.
CEMEX will be presented with its Big Tick award at the Royal College of Music, central London and will find out it if they have won an Award of Excellence for the International category on 5th July 2010 at the award ceremony.
