ISG Bowls Them Over At Tesco Ashford Project

The local community in Ashford will be celebrating both enhanced shopping facilities and the prospect of a new cricket season thanks to ISG's £5.2 million extension to the local Tesco store.

ISG handed over the Kent scheme on 28th November following a 25-week programme to add a 20,000 ft2 extension to the front and side of the existing store. The project has included construction of a new checkout area at the front of the store, allowing an increase in the ground floor trading space.

To the side of the existing store, ISG has constructed a ground and mezzanine floor extension with a Costa Coffee concession, warehousing and office areas, and a staff restaurant. The additional retail space created has also enabled the addition of a new pharmacy, phone shop, Tesco Direct and enhanced photography lab offerings and ISG has also refurbished the existing deli counter.

The scheme is the latest in a succession of Tesco projects for ISG and the company has a long-running tradition of working closely with local communities throughout the duration of schemes. In this instance, the project team gained an unexpected additional opportunity to engage with local residents when the local cricket club was broken into. Thieves had stolen all the copper plumbing from Ashford Cricket Club's shower and toilet facilities, forcing the club to close. However, thanks to ISG's swift offer of skilled plumbers, labourers and carpenters to help put matters right again, the cricket club was able to re-open within two weeks of the break in.

Andy Demetriou, ISG's operations director of UK Retail, commented: "As a contractor we represent both our own company and our client's brand throughout our time on site and we work hard to preserve and enhance the reputation of both. The theft at the cricket club was a dreadful blow to the community and we were only too happy to provide whatever resources we could to help the club get back to normal."
