ISG Secures A Further Two Projects With Aspire Defence

ISG has commenced work on its latest two projects secured as part of the MoD's strategically important 35-year PFI infrastructure contract, Project Allenby/Connaught, being delivered by Aspire Defence. Awarded to ISG following Aspire Defence's competitive tender process, the projects have a combined value of £8 million and include the construction of a Physical and Recreational Training Centre (P&RTC), as well as a Health and Dental Centre at Bulford, Salisbury.

These schemes involve the demolition of a number of buildings on site to make way for the new facilities and ISG will also be tasked with the refurbishment of an existing swimming pool, which will then be incorporated into the new building. The striking two-storey steel frame P&RTC building will feature facing brickwork, render and aluminium curtain walling to its façade and houses a multi-use sports hall, extensive changing facilities and a first floor fitness suite.

The existing swimming pool will be systematically refurbished as part of the scheme, with the pool retained and upgraded with modern mechanical and electrical services installed and new wet changing facilities created. ISG will carefully phase the construction of the P&RTC as this involves the demolition of existing healthcare facilities on site, which is being coordinated with the construction of the replacement health and dental centre which ISG is also undertaking.

These wins are the latest in a series of construction projects carried out by ISG as part of Aspire Defence's eight year construction programme, with around £60 million worth of schemes already delivered by the contractor over the past three years. ISG is one of a limited number of supply chain partners invited to bid for elements of the capital works programmes and the company currently has 10 live sites across military projects in Larkhilll, Bulford, Warminster, on Salisbury Plain and at Aldershot.

While many of ISG's previous schemes for Aspire Defence have been carried out within restricted military areas, both the P&RTC and the health and dental centre are outside the security zone and intended for use by both service personnel and their families. The P&RTC is scheduled for completion in December 2012 and the health & dental centre is due to complete in January 2012.

John Rawlinson, ISG's South West managing director, commented: "The ability to work effectively within a highly specialised and restricted environment is essential for the successful delivery of our projects across the Aspire Defence construction programme. The sites that we manage on Salisbury Plain are remote, which presents logistical challenges, however three years of learned experience across the contract have resulted in our acute understanding of the Carillion and KBR joint venture's process-driven approach, furnishing the business with the expertise to ensure consistent project delivery."
