Designed by HLN Architects, the new three-storey L-shaped concrete framed structure is a statement building on the school campus and features facing brick work, terracotta rainscreen cladding and curtain walling to its façade. Solar shading panels and vertical stone fins are a key element of the contemporary design and also add to the sustainable credentials of the building. Facilities include eleven classrooms, two language laboratories, IT suite, social and resource rooms and a range of administrative offices and the building will be opened in time for the start of the new academic year in 2012.

Occupying a logistically challenging site, which is bounded on all sides by occupied school buildings, ISG has developed a robust schedule of works to ensure the construction of the new Modern Languages Department has minimal impact on staff and students at the school. Further sustainable elements of the project include the installation of a green sedum roof on the new building, which will help reduce surface run off and absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the construction of secure bicycle storage facilities to encourage the greater use of sustainable forms of transport.

ISG's Jonathan Kell, managing director - Midlands, commented: "As our first project for Rugby School, the Modern Languages Department building is a major win for the business and importantly marks the initial phase of a major programme of infrastructure investment at the site. Once completed, the striking new building will undoubtedly prove an important asset, supporting the school's commitment to delivering exceptional teaching and pastoral care to all of its students.
