ISG has commenced work on a £2.5 million education project for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council at Fairfield Primary School. The scheme forms part of a major investment programme by the council to upgrade and modernise education provision across the region, and this latest project sees ISG bring together Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classes within a single building by extending the existing Fairfield Primary School.

The project has been carefully phased to minimise potential disruption at the school, with key works scheduled to take place during holiday periods. The initial phase sees ISG create a new playground, to replace the existing play area, which becomes the site for the new Key Stage 1 extension. The construction of the single-storey steel frame building is the next phase of the development, with the structure designed to blend seamlessly with the existing school.
The new extension boasts a number of sustainable features, which will not only minimise the environmental impact of the building but also reduce the overall running costs of the school. ISG will install a ground source heat pump system, which converts heat stored beneath the surface of the ground and uses this energy to supply under floor heating in the extension. A passive ventilation system and roof mounted sun pipes, which focus sunlight into the building, also contribute to the extension's strong environmental performance.
Key Stage 1 pupils will benefit from a range of new facilities at Fairfield Primary School including a nursery, two large reception classrooms and a further four purpose-built classrooms for Years 1 and 2. The extension also features a child care studio, library and reading area, as well as a new head teacher's office. The proceeding phase sees the extension of the existing ICT suite in the main school building and the construction of a new plant room.
Following the conclusion of this work, ISG will then commence a comprehensive programme of refurbishment within the existing building, focusing on the classrooms and welfare areas. Windows will be replaced and building services will be stripped out and replaced with modern efficient mechanical and electrical systems. The final phase of the development sees the contractor demolish the former Infants school building and form a new car park area. The project is scheduled for completion by summer 2011.
John Gittins, ISG's regional managing director, commented: "This latest project win closely follows the successful completion of our first ever scheme for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council at Thornaby C of E Primary School. ISG's overall performance and ability to deliver to exacting standards within a busy, live environment undoubtedly played a major role in helping the business secure this second project at Fairfield Primary School. We look forward to further developing our close working relationship with the Council as a trusted and valued construction partner."
