A UK first for charities and community groups has now launched on the Wirral.
ReciproCity Wirral is a first of a kind business, selling surplus construction materials into charities and community projects at a fraction of the retail price.
Working in conjunction with the web based business Recipro, launched by local entrepreneur Les Owens in 2008, the new service will provide valuable resources to worthwhile projects in need, meaning that financial resource can be spent elsewhere.
Construction companies will benefit from the service through reductions in waste, and associated costs, detailed in comprehensive carbon and waste reduction reports, as well as social impact report demonstrating the benefit the donated material has provided to the local community.
Construction suppliers are also using the ReciproCities as an outlet for end of line, slow moving or returned stock. National merchant, Travis Perkins are using the Wirral ReciproCity for local branches. John Leader, Group Environment Manager for Travis Perkins said 'using this new service from Recipro is a great example of how Travis Perkins is putting sustainability to work in our business. There are clear environmental, social and financial benefits for all parties involved, which fits perfectly with our strategy of creating a sustainable competitive advantage for the whole Travis Perkins Group'. The Travis Perkins Group includes Wickes, the DIY store, and the Birkenhead branch generously donated 150 litres of paint for the refurbishment of the ReciproCity Wirral.
The new ReciproCity was launched on the 2nd December at an event attended by the Mayor of the Wirral, and delegates from a number of local and national businesses.
Many community groups have already benefited from the Recipro service:
Warrington Rowing Club: "Warrington Rowing Club would like to put on record our thanks to the team at Recipro who have helped in providing a sustainable and cost effective supply of materials for the development of the new clubhouse. Cost savings made through using Recipro have enabled the club to make more progress than expected in delivering a first class club-house for the local community."
Anihab Uk: "Through Recipro we were lucky enough to receive some of the best timber we could of asked for, which will allow us to build some shelters to house the animals over winter, a purchase that would of cost us well over a £1000 was kindly donated."

• It was launched in October 2008 by Wirral based construction company, The Trustland Group, who celebrate 40 years in business next year.
