Many homeowners are not aware of the asbestos which may be present in their homes and could have unknowingly disturbed this when using the loft space as storage. Homes built before 2000 may contain asbestos as this was a very popular building material.
Often people store Christmas decorations out of the way and the loft space within your home seems the perfect option.
One example of asbestos found in lofts, is of Social housing provider Somer, Bath's biggest landlord are having to pay for new Christmas decorations for some of its tenants after an asbestos alert turned their lofts into no-go zones. Low-level asbestos cement residue was found in loft spaces, which had been left over after the removal of asbestos cement sheets in 2009.
Linda Softley, Marketing Manager advises. "If you are unsure if asbestos presents a risk within your property, you should obtain a survey to identify of its presence."
"We all want to have a wonderful Christmas so I would advise all homeowners to seek advice on any asbestos containing materials which they suspect may be present in their homes."
The last thing you want is a nightmare before Christmas!
