ISG Takes Top Industry Award For Bradford Healthcare Scheme

ISG's Ridge Medical Practice development in Bradford has won a prestigious Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Award. The £5.8 million practice, which opened to the public in October 2009 and is the largest facility of its type in the city, took top honours in the Community Category and the project is now shortlisted for the National Excellence Awards, which are held later in the year.

The LABC awards celebrate building excellence and projects are nominated by local authority Building Control Officers. Within the West Yorkshire region, the judging panel of industry experts reviewed a range of community schemes from across Calderdale, Kirklees, Wakefield, Bradford and Leeds, drawing up a shortlist of just four exceptional projects. The awards not only highlight excellence within build quality and workmanship, but also reward an outstanding team approach, demonstrating positive, constructive engagement between the council, contractor, client, designer and end-user.

The Ridge Medical Practice has rapidly established itself as a core community facility and its outstanding design and quality of finish was highly commended by the judging panel. The practice, which is located within the Great Horton Conservation and replaced a nearby surgery that was too small to meet demand, now offers some of the latest and most sophisticated medical services in the UK.

Designed by architects Healthcare Design Partnership, the three-storey curved building features an 80-seat flexible lecture theatre, library and study areas and office facilities for the Primary Care Trust (PCT). Facilities include a range of consulting and treatment rooms, minor surgery suites, and a large pharmacy. The building incorporates a raft of sustainable technology to minimise operational costs and reduce its impact on the environment, including a natural ventilation system, under floor heating, roof mounted solar collectors to generate hot water and a green sedum roof.

John Gittins, ISG's regional director, commented: "All entries to the LABC awards are submitted solely by the council's Building Control Officers and therefore represent a truly independent measure of the quality and excellence of projects. We are delighted once again to have secured a prestigious award for one of our key note regional developments. The Ridge Medical Practice is an excellent example of our ability to take a challenging brief and deliver an outstanding result that raises the standard of the local built environment."
