The Armoury Group's demolition of two multi-story tower blocks has paved the way for the regeneration of a dilapidated area of Solihull.
The Worcester House and Nuffield House towers in Smiths Wood were demolished after a long period of being un-inhabited to make way for the construction of a new shopping centre.
Armoury Group, one of the UK's leading demolition and enabling works companies, undertook the project on behalf of Solihull Council and Whitefriars Housing Group, having previously executed a similar large demolition programme for them at a site in Coventry.
After completing specialist asbestos removal and a soft-strip out prior to demolition, Armoury dismantled each of the 16-storey towers in three sections using a range of specialist machinery during each stage, recycling 95% of the waste produced as per it's commitment to sustainability and waste recycling.
Keith McDowall, Operations Director of Armoury Group commented: "It was important that Armoury was able to demonstrate that it can deliver highly sustainable solutions during environmentally hazardous processes on regeneration projects of this nature.
"The regeneration of any area signals a new beginning for the local community and its surroundings, and our team had a duty to effectively dispose of these structures in a way that was both empathetic to the general public and the current infrastructure. This is exactly why we always plan each project so rigorously to provide minimal environmental impact and disruption, whilst meeting the sustainability standards of our partners."
"As the site was located in the heart of a residential community and backed directly on to a number of bungalow's, Armoury asserted precision planning to ensure that an optimum level of Health & Safety was adhered to throughout the course of the project.
"By protecting nearby homes most affected with scaffolding and maintaining a constant flow of information to local residents with weekly update meetings, Armoury achieved a smooth demolition process from start to finish."
Rob Askew, Development Manager on behalf of North Solihull Partnership added: "We had worked with Armoury previously, and the company had more than proved itself in having the right attributes to carry out this project being both sympathetic to both the demolition and the surrounding community."
