"Demolition no longer such an explosive issue" Journal of Commerce

This press release comes from the Journal of Commerce. It provides an overview of how a non-explosive demolition product called Sylentmite is effective in demolishing rock or concrete without explosives, without sound or dust or vibration. Here is a safe alternative to explosives and more efficient solution for rock and concrete breaking.

Some chronic problems of demolition have been blasting noise, scattered material and the specialized personal, insurance and permits needed to do the job.

This is particularly true for demolitions in populated areas or working in environmentally sensitive areas

However, a new product exhibited at Buildex Vancouver and the World of Concrete in Las Vegas, is a powdered blend of natural minerals which, when mixed with water, can expand in drilled holes with a strength of 20,000 PSI breaking rock, reinforced concrete, granite, marble limestone and sandstone with no sound.

"You can do demolition in residential areas, around hospitals and schools and areas that are seismically sensitive," said Jason Cohen, partner in Sylentmite Canada, the exclusive distributor for Sylentmite.

Cohen said that last August the product proved its effectiveness in demolishing a concrete utility pad in a populated area. (visit www.sylentmite.ca )

The product was used when a major construction company required the removal of a rooftop pad on a new downtown tower after it was built too high and failed inspection.

The residential tower was three days from opening, stood seven-storeys tall, and the only roof access was through the elevator.

Access, noise and equipment were all constraints of the site.

"They came to us," said Cohen, adding a plan was devised around the problems.

A drilling company cored 16 holes, with the spacing of the holes determining how large the chunks of concrete are when broken up.

The material was poured and the slab broken. The concrete pieces were removed by a wheelbarrow in the elevator.

"The whole project was completed in a day," he said, adding a new slab was poured and the building kept on schedule.

Cohen said Sylentmite is finding quick acceptance in the marketplace because it is safe and cost effective alternative and doesn't require any insurance, permits or specially-trained individuals to handle it.

Everyone from the local handyman to a building professional can use it for projects such as the removal of a concrete walk to walls, foundations or boulders.

Sylentmite has been used internationally in 16 countries for the past three years and is new to the North American market.

Cohen added his company is willing to work with construction firms interested in the product.
