Yesterday the government announced that there is an additional £30m worth of funding available to support public sector organisations and local community groups in making energy efficiency improvements and generating green energy.
The additional £30m is made up of two parts: £20m funding will be provided to the Salix loan scheme and £10m of funding is being put in to the Local Energy Assessment Fund (LEAF) which will be managed by the Energy Saving Trust.
The combination of additional funding is being made available to schools, hospitals, universities and public sector organisations and will enable them to make improvements within the buildings to become more energy efficient. More importantly, it will enable them to make significant savings in both energy and carbon emissions.
The government funded Salix loan scheme is set to cut public sector carbon emissions by around 210,000 tonnes whilst reducing energy bills by up to £46million per year.
Once buildings become more energy efficient, utility bills are significantly reduced and it is these overall savings that will be used by public sector organisations to repay the loans.
Local community funding awards of up to £50,000 are available to parish councils, development trusts and voluntary associations through the Local Energy Assessment Fund (LEAF) .
Public sector organisations keen to apply for this funding can do so from 7th December 2011 until the 22nd December in the first application phase. The second application phase runs until 20th January 2012.
This funding is a fantastic opportunity for local communities and public sector organisations to bring energy efficiency to their communities. The low interest green energy funding has been made available at a time when budgets are tight and much needed building improvements had (in some cases) been put on the back burner.
By inviting public sector firms to apply for this cash injection, improvements can become a priority and energy efficiency brought to the forefront.
