A LEADING renewable energy installer has signed a new deal with hospitality giant Whitbread to supply all green equipment to a new combined 'green' hotel and restaurant.
Surrey based Isoenergy will supply the latest green energy products to Whitbread's new Premier Inn in Burgess Hill, Sussex, which is due to open later this year. The business will also be designing and installing the hotel's ground source heat pump system.
Isoenergy's Managing Director Justin Broadbent said the deal is a terrific one to land for the firm,
coming soon after it installed a ground source heat pump in Whitbread's Tamworth Premier Inn - its first 'green hotel' in the UK.
"The Tamworth project has blazed a trail showing exactly what can be achieved using a combination of green energy products," he said. "It was the first fully green Premier Inn in the UK, and this new hotel will aim to follow in Tamworth's footsteps. Isoenergy have designed a heating system using a 40kW Nibe ground source heat pump for spatial heating and using the Danish Nilan mechanical ventilation heat recovery (with air to air heat pump) extracting waste heat from the restaurant and kitchens to pre-heat the hotels domestic hot water.
A spokesperson for Premier Inn owners Whitbread said: "Burgess Hill's clever combination of high-tech environmental features and advanced construction measures will allow us to achieve truly impressive results in terms of cutting carbon and conserving water. The hotel will include many of the best performing technologies pioneered at our first green hotel in Tamworth."
Mr Broadbent said the hotel and hospitality industry is becoming more keenly aware of the cost benefits of energy conservation.
"We are seeing a sea change in outlook in the industry," he said. "There is of course greater pressure on all new build properties to use renewable energy. But what is really making a difference is cost. The cost of installing energy efficient equipment for hotels is now reducing dramatically through Government cash incentive schemes. This includes the Feed In Tariff which came into force this month. Under the FIT hotel owners who install low carbon electricity technology such as solar photovoltaic (pv) panels and wind turbines up to 5 megawatts will be paid for the electricity they generate, even if they use it themselves. The level of payment depends on the technology and is linked to inflation. They will get a further payment for any electricity they feed into the grid. These payments will be in addition to benefiting from reduced bills as they reduce the need to buy electricity."
Mr Broadbent also said the new Renewable Heat Incentive, which is due to come into force in April 2011, will encourage a greater take up of renewable technologies using energy efficient systems.
"The RHI will see the Government pay property owners including hoteliers for the heat they generate themselves," he said. "This reward is likely to run into thousands of pounds every year for hotels. For any hotel running on oil, going green is likely to become a no brainer as it will be so much cheaper to use green energy in the long run. Whitbread is really leading the way in identifying these benefits and putting them into action."
