A growing number of consumers are using social media platforms like twitter and facebook to seek advice about saving money and energy through eco home improvements. A study* undertaken by thinkinsulation.com, ahead of World Environment Day on Sunday 5th June, found that on average 255,000 questions on the topic of home energy efficiency are being shared by twitter and facebook users every day in the UK.
The majority of questions (80 per cent) were about the cost saving benefits of home energy efficiency improvements, with 15 per cent of queries from people looking for practical advice about the installation of products such as loft insulation and solar panels. More generally it seems users of social media are an environmentally aware bunch with over one million mentions of green issues shared online in the last 30 days∞.
To celebrate World Environment Day, which was set up nearly 40 years ago to stimulate awareness of world environment issues, Thinkinsulation has launched a twitter hashtag, #GREENHOME. The hashtag will help consumers find answers to their questions more easily and share green home improvement tips and advice amongst the twitter community. The twitter hashtag can be added to any tweet to improve search ability.
Lydia Sharples from Thinkinsulation comments: "Social media platforms like twitter and facebook are now a huge part of everyday life and provide a natural platform for people looking for a range of advice. As household fuel bills continue to rise, home energy efficiency is an increasingly popular talking point. The average home can save about £300 a year by being energy efficient, according to the Energy Saving Trust and measures such as mending broken boilers, closing curtains at night and fitting energy saving light bulbs will all help save energy.
"However, before you do any of this, installing insulation is an essential first step. It is one of the most effective ways of reducing heat loss and helping to make energy bills more affordable. A simple DIY job such as insulating a loft to the correct standards will dramatically reduce energy consumption and can save you around £145α per year on your energy bills. Furthermore insulating an un-insulated solid wall property - often those built before 1930 - can equate to cost savings of as much as £385 a year."
