The chairman of a local charity group chose the 15th anniversary celebrations to announce the total raised has topped half a million pounds.
The news came during Chris Collier's speech to more than 200 guests at the NSPCC Peterborough Business Support Group's Gala Dinner with Penny Smith.
As well as being a night of celebration, the event, held at Peterborough Marriott Hotel, helped boost the group's fundraising total by a further £13,000, thanks to the generosity of guests.
The Gala event was organised to celebrate 15 years of the group raising money to help vulnerable children in the Greater Peterborough area. The evening included a charity auction, raffle, a draw for a Mulberry handbag, an after dinner speech by special guest former Evening Telegraph reporter and GMTV presenter Penny Smith, and a tribute to Chris Collier and his dedicated committee members.
Chris received a rousing reception and a standing ovation for his dedication to the group during its entire existence. Special mention was also given to those committee members and supporters who have worked with the group since 1996.
Opera-lover Penny Smith donated a money-can't-buy lot to the auction - a ticket to accompany her to the first night of a West End opera. Fierce bidding saw the price rise quickly, with auctioneer Heart FM's breakfast presenter Kev Lawrence finally bringing the hammer down at £3,000.
Penny took to the floor to talk about her time at the Evening Telegraph, recalling the smell of sugar beet and her string of 'clapped out cars'. She also shared some secrets from the GMTV sofa and her time at Sky News.
Chris Collier said: "The whole evening felt like just what it was - a celebration of the committee's achievements over the past 15 years. It was certainly very apt that we were able to announce our new fund raising total of £500,000 at such a special event. Every penny of that has been used to support children in our city who so desperately need help. What better reason could there be for all the commitment and hard work given by everyone involved with the group."
