The apprentices are working and training across a variety of trades and will be full-time employees of Kier.

They will be given on-site experience, as well as attending day or block release training at Barnsley College, and will move around the business to gain a variety of experience while working towards the full apprenticeship framework in their chosen trade.

Connor Leach, had undergone work experience prior to starting his apprenticeship with Kier and commented:

"This apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to further my skills and so far I am really enjoying it. I hope to be here for many years to come." Kier recruits its apprentices from a variety of sources including the open market and now employs a total of five apprentices and three adult trainees in Barnsley, who are training to become qualified joiners, maintenance operatives and plumbers.

Kier senior operations director for maintenance, Phil Oades, said:

"Training and apprenticeships are vital for the future of our company, our community and our local economy and Kier remains committed to making a positive contribution whenever we can."

Berneslai Homes Director of Assets, Regeneration and Construction, Stephen Davis said:

"One of the promises made by Kier when signing the agreement was that they would support apprenticeships in conjunction with Barnsley College. They have kept their promise and as a result of this another three local people have been provided with an important step on the career ladder. We will continue to support apprenticeship schemes throughout the length of the contract."
