With Christmas decorations already going up across the UK and the weather getting ever colder, repairs and maintenance provider Kier is determined not to let bad weather interfere with the invaluable service it provides to customers of Boston Mayflower and L&H Homes.

Kier has implemented a number of measures to minimise disruption to services during expected bad weather over the coming winter months. These will include a team leader, a four-wheel drive vehicle and four 4X4 transit vehicles for technicians, as well as upskilling front-line staff to reduce the need for repeat visits and the introduction of a buddy system to maintain colleague safety in rural areas.
Kier will provide regular updates for customers and staff on managing service delivery during periods of extreme weather and a staff geographical profiling exercise has begun to try and enable staff to work in their local area should they be unable to travel into base. Kier has also issued winter working equipment including shovels, thermal underwear and thick protective gloves. In addition, the company has undertaken a project to identify vulnerable customers to ensure they are given priority.
This includes already taking delivery of grit to ensure repairs can be carried out safely at sheltered accommodation residences. Kier senior operations manager for maintenance, Heidi Thompson, said: "Last year the snow and bad weather caused problems for people up and down the country. We were extremely proud of all our staff, who made a valiant effort to carry on with essential repairs and maintenance work despite difficult conditions. "This year we have learnt from our experience and implemented a strict action plan, which ensures that residents whose service is affected by bad weather will have minimum disruption.
