Kier Stoke has taken on five new apprentices as it continues to recognise the importance of training to support future growth within Stoke and supply the skills needed to develop the future UK construction industry.
Working with PM Training, a local social enterprise training provider, the five youngsters will gain tuition through Kier Stoke qualifying them to work in their chosen trade. Jordan Steventon (17), James Cairns (18) and Michael O'Neil (16) are undertaking gas plumbing apprenticeships, while Jack Cartwright (17) and Tom Davies (17) will learn the skills required to become plasterers.
Stoke-on-Trent has one of the lowest proportions of people in employment (full, part-time and self-employed) in England and Wales and the 70th highest rate of unemployment. Kier Stoke aims to help rectify this situation for present and future generations through the provision of employment and training for local people.
Kier Stoke senior service manager, Gary Turner, said: "Kier Stoke recognises the importance of employing local labour and we are dedicated to upskilling our workforce. Apprentices are key to the business' future and we're proud to invest in our local area and support upcoming talent."
Additionally, Kier Stoke provided the opportunity for several trainees from PM Training to work on its photovoltaic solar panel project to acquire further knowledge and hands-on experience. The solar project involves Kier Stoke working with energy supplier E.ON to deliver energy efficiency to residents of Stoke-on-Trent Council-owned homes by installing the solar panels to properties.
PM Training is a leading social enterprise operating in the private and public sectors. It aims to deliver excellent training and employment services with a vision to create enterprising futures for everyone, including the companies and communities they work with.
