Innovative partnership saves money and the environment

Kier North Tyneside has saved money and the environment thanks to an innovative partnership with local company Earth Friendly Supplies Ltd to dispose of surplus paint supplies. Kier, which provides repairs and maintenance provision to council owned properties across North Tyneside, sent around 300 litres of paint for recycling which was otherwise destined for landfill.

Disposal of paint can be a difficult and expensive process as it is classified as hazardous waste due to the damage the chemicals contained can cause to the environment. Kier North Tyneside was quoted £2,000 to safely dispose of the leftover paint it had stored at its headquarters in Killingworth but, thanks to a partnership with Earth Friendly Supplies, this was reduced to £60 to transport the paint to the recycling facility. Kier's regional director for maintenance, Mike Furze, said: "At Kier we are always looking for ways to provide a better and more financially beneficial service to our tenants. By developing sensible partnerships with suppliers we are able to pass our savings on to our residents as well as providing added benefits to the local community.

Recycling our leftover paint provides benefits to the environment as less paint ends up in landfill sites and this latest project has proven it can also provide financial benefits. It is important to us to support local businesses and it has been a pleasure to work with the Earth Friendly Supplies team." So far 80 tins of paint have been collected from the Kier North Tyneside depot in Killingworth by the Earth Friendly Supplies team, and a further 240 will be collected over the next few weeks.

Earth Friendly Supplies managing director, Stephen Hull, said: "There is an ever-increasing demand on companies to be more ecologically aware and suppliers must be more environmentally sensitive with the products and services they offer. We are delighted to be able to work with Kier to help them dispose of surplus supplies of paint in order to provide a more environmentally, as well as financially, sound service to residents."

Earth Friendly Supplies has previously supplied Kier North Tyneside with its environmentally friendly recycled paint for use on Decent Homes improvements to 300 properties in the area, and is currently in talks to supply the paint for future improvements, as well as day-to-day repairs.
