Six local apprentices have secured full-time jobs with Kier Services in Islington following the completion of a mixture of three and four-year-long apprenticeships with the repairs and maintenance contract. Aged between 19 and 27 years, the apprentices have been appointed to work across a number of professional trades.

Programmes such as Kier's apprenticeship scheme present work-based learning, which not only provides 'earn while you learn' experience, but also directly benefits and improves the local area through the enhancement of facilities for residents.

Kier Services operations manager, Eamon O'Donnell, said: "The investments we have made in our apprenticeships programme provide us with the solid foundations to deliver repairs and maintenance to the highest standards, not only today, but more fundamentally, into the future. This provides training and employment opportunities within both the local area and the repairs and maintenance sector."

Kier in Islington currently employs 13 apprentices who are training to become qualified joiners, plasterers, electricians and plumbers. Every year the company aims to take on a number of young people onto its apprenticeship course, many of which join following on from completing Kier's First Start course. First Start targets youngsters aged 16 to 18 to become involved in new employment opportunities. Participants learn repairs and maintenance related skills delivered by Kier's volunteer supervisors. Programmes link into local education and employment partners who facilitate routes to further learning and employment. Participants receive an NVQ level 1 or 'Certificate of Competence'.
Joining Kier in Islington is David Bayford, 20, and Luke McMahon, 22, who both started as apprentices in September 2007 to train as electricians. The four-year-long course has allowed both to gain hands-on experience as well as learning the skills and theory behind the job.

Harry Rowson, 19, and Leon Moisis, 26, joined Kier on its apprenticeship scheme in September 2008 and trained in painting and decorating with wet trades. Both will now work for the company putting the skills learnt over the course into practice.

Bradley Machin, 27 started his apprenticeship in September 2008 to train as a carpenter. Bradley's full-time appointment with Kier will now see him working within the legal disrepair section.

Plumber Shane Coyle, 20, who joined Kier in Islington in September 2007, also joins the company full time after completing his four-year-long plumbing apprenticeship course.
