Three colleagues from Kier in Islington have completed a 355-mile cycle challenge from Swanley, in Kent, to Cherbourg and are expected to have raised £2,000 for charity. The money will be divided between local Islington-based charity Clarity Welfare for the Blind, Marie Curie and When You Wish upon a Star, which arranges special experiences for children with life threatening illnesses.
During the initial journey from Swanley to Folkestone, the group was joined by 13 cyclists made up primarily by Kier employees and two London Borough of Islington client officers. Three Kier colleagues - mobile supervisor Alvin Martini, non housing supervisor Andy Jeffreys and union convenor Bob Haddock - continued on the five-day ride to Cherbourg.
Bob Haddock said: "It was hard going but I really enjoyed it. We had great team spirit and I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone for their donations and support."
The cyclists were supported along the way by a minibus which Kier had supplied to offer support, refreshments and aid along the way. An open-back truck was also donated by the building maintenance company to help transport the bikes.
Bob, Alvin and Andy have completed similar charity events over the past two years. Last year they cycled from Hamburg to Amsterdam in a six-day journey along the coast. The trio also completed London to Amsterdam in 2008 to raise funds for treatment for colleague Gary Russell, who sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2009.
