The young students are each taking part in an eight-week placement alongside dedicated mentors at Kier. As well as developing their practical competencies, including how to use computer systems and dealing with customer requests on the telephone, the trainees, all aged between 18 and 24, are gaining useful experience and life skills in a workplace environment.
One trainee, Tish Dixon from Boston, joined the scheme last year and has since been working in a paid position with Kier sourced through a temporary recruitment agency. She said: "With competition being so fierce for paid work at the moment, Kier provided me with a fantastic opportunity to gain on-the-job experience within a real working environment. While the work is sometime challenging it is great to be constantly learning new skills. I am hopeful that my temporary placement will help me to secure a permanent position."
The placements have been organised through the Jobcentre with all students receiving their full Jobseekers' Allowance at the same time as developing their skills. Learners will also be able to use their contacts at Kier as references when searching for jobs in the future. Kier's senior operation manager, Heidi Thompson, said: "Young people often find themselves with the age old dilemma of not being able to get a job without experience but not being able to get experience without securing a position.
Our scheme aims to help these young people into jobs and set them on the path of meaningful employment." Kier in Boston also currently employs four apprentices who are training to become qualified joiners, maintenance operatives and plumbers.
