Kier Sheffield wins gold at the Considerate Constructors Scheme's National Company Awards

The gold award was presented to Kier, which was the first repairs and maintenance company in the country to join the scheme's company registration initiative and the first to receive the top prize, at a ceremony held at the Berkeley Hotel in London.

It recognises Kier's exceptionally high levels of consideration to the neighbourhood and general public, the workforce and the environment when carrying out repairs and maintenance services to around 42,000 council-owned properties across the city.

Representatives from Kier were presented with the award by the Considerate Constructors Scheme's chairman Robert Biggs and guest speaker Julia Evans, chief executive of the National Federation of Builders (NFB). Kier regional managing director for maintenance, Simon Bullen, said: "At Kier we strive to carry out our work to the highest quality while working alongside the local community ensuring that any disruption is kept to an absolute minimum.

We work in neighbourhoods across the city and do everything we can to ensure we are responsible, respectful and safe. We are delighted with achieving gold and we look forward to continually improving and evolving our good practices further over the coming months.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme was established in 1997 and aims to improve the image of construction. Companies registering their sites with the scheme agree to be considerate, a good neighbour, clean, respectful, safe, environmentally conscious, responsible and accountable.

Considerate Constructors Scheme chairman, Robert Biggs, said: "It is a pleasure to recognise and reward the exceptional measures that registered companies have put into practice with our National Company Awards. The nature of Kier's activities means constant interaction with housing tenants, from the initial booking-in process to the completion of the required work. In every phase, Kier demonstrated real care and consideration towards tenants. Cleanliness at each location was an absolute priority, with extensive protection afforded to interiors and all waste taken back to base for recycling.

"The whole operation is extremely well run and all operatives seen were a credit to Kier, being both so approachable and conscientious in their work."

The gold award follows a number of high scoring Considerate Constructors Scheme reports for Kier Sheffield projects across the city, including work on the relocation of the Woolley Wood Primary School to the site of the existing Mansel Primary School, and installation of state-of-the-art learning facilities to the new site. With a score of 37 out of 40, the site was officially classed as 'an exceptionally good site' and within the top ten per cent of sites in the country.
