Children across Barnsley enjoyed soaking up the sun as part of a community fun day supported by local maintenance provider Kier. Picnic in the Park, in Wombwell Park, was organised by Barnsley Council in partnership with Berneslai Homes to bring the community together for a day of family fun.

Kier ran a colouring competition for children in three age groups (ages 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8), with each winner receiving a goodie bag containing activities to keep them entertained over the summer holidays including colouring books and crayons. Kier also supplied lunch to 500 local youngsters and Kier health & safety mascot, Kieran, was on hand to help entertain the children.

Kier operations director for maintenance, Phil Oades, said: "We always try and have regular contact with residents in areas in which we work and, by taking part in events like Picnic in the Park we are able to offer tenants a great opportunity to ask any questions they may have and feed back to us on the service we provide. The event was also a great way for us to give something back to the local community and we hope the children enjoyed the activities."

Kier has carried out repairs and maintenance services in the Wombwell area since April 2010 to improve properties owned by Barnsley Council and managed by Berneslai Homes. Kier has also carried out Decent Homes improvements to properties around Barnsley, including refurbishing kitchens and bathrooms and installing double glazed windows.

The event provided local residents with an opportunity to discuss any concerns or suggestions with Barnsley Council, Kier and Berneslai Homes, while the children enjoyed activities including trampolines, seaside activities, and giant Connect 4 and Jenga.

Kier will be involved in further community fun events over the summer in Barnsley including one in Great Houghton Garden on 3 September.
