Kier Harlow welcomed Robert Halfon MP to spend the day with its team and enjoy a tour of its facilities, including its award winning waste transfer system, providing him with an insight into a working day with the council's repairs and maintenance provider.

Mr Halfon visited a variety of departments within the business learning how the company co-ordinates its team to respond to the borough's repair and maintenance requests. Operations director John Phillips took him on a tour of the depot were he was able to visit the repairs and maintenance team, as well as meeting with technical co-ordinator, Graham Larkin, to see the procedures associated with a typical repairs job.

Kier Harlow environmental manager, Doug Goodyer, and waste transfer operator, Chris Blow, also met with Mr Halfon and were keen to demonstrate the company's dedication to the environment and the benefits of its waste transfer station.

Doug commented: "Mr Halfon was very keen to learn more about our waste transfer station and took special interest in our recycling procedures. It was a pleasure to show him around the station."

The waste transfer system was key to Kier Harlow's recent Green Apple Environmental Award in Environmental Best Practice for its 'Waste Not, Want Not' project.

When Kier Harlow embarked on the project in 2008, it aimed to redefine the company's approach to waste and set about changing the attitudes and awareness of environmental practices among staff. The project has enabled the company to not only provide a greener solution to its waste transfer, but also be more efficient and cost effective in the way waste is processed.

The waste transfer system was introduced at the Kier Harlow depot to split waste into segregated areas for recycling, collection or disposal by appropriate contractors, making the process more user-friendly for those involved. Kier Harlow has also installed an interceptor to stop pollution and harmful chemicals seeping into the environment.
