Kier Stoke and Stoke-on-Trent City Council have issued a joint warning for householders across the city to check the identity of unknown visitors to their homes following reports of bogus callers trying to gain entry into people's houses.
Kier Stoke has distributed double-sided cards to all social housing tenants in the city, to be placed on either a window or a glass door panel, advising callers that they will be asked for ID when the door is answered, while from the inside reminding the resident to ask for the appropriate identification before allowing entrance to the property.
Kier Stoke customer service manager, Kate Kenney, says: "A lot of our work involves visiting people at home and we need to ensure tenants feel safe answering the door to Kier staff. It's worth reminding them to check the identification badges of all callers, not just those from Kier.
"Most people who knock on someone's door are genuine callers. However, you can not always be sure, so it is important to take some precautions before opening the door. Every member of Kier staff has to carry their ID card at all times.
"A simple check of the ID card will always help put the tenant's mind at rest and will enable us to carry out our work quickly and professionally."
Kier Stoke would like to remind tenants there should be nothing to worry about when people call and to remind everyone to follow these simple safety tips:
• Lock - Keep your front and back doors locked, even when you are at home. Check that the back door is locked and take the key out
• Stop - Are you are expecting a caller? Look to see who the caller is before opening the door
• Chain - Put the door chain, or bar, on before you open the door and keep it on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep
• Check - Ask to see the caller's ID card and take the time to check it properly, being careful not to take the door off the chain. If you feel worried, telephone the company the caller says they are from - do not use the one on the ID card as it might be fake. If the caller says they are from Kier, please telephone the number you have in your tenancy pack.
Kate adds: "Kier also advises people to be extra cautious of callers who appear to be in a hurry, or who ask you to step outside your house - they may say they need to make an urgent call and ask to use your phone or they may ask for a drink of water. Do not let them in."
