Peterborough-based medical devices company Coloplast is investing in the safety of its staff by sending more than 100 employees on a half day, one-to-one driving skills course.

Although the course is mandatory for Coloplast's company car drivers, those involved have been eager to sign up, with more than half of the company's drivers booking their course within ten days of the initiative being launched.

Susan Briance, contracts and commercial services officer at Coloplast, explains: "We have more than 130 company car drivers around the UK. For many of them, the lessons before their driving test were the only formal driving tuition they have had. Undertaking a driver awareness course can refresh their skills and help to ensure that their time spent on the road is as safe as possible.

"Our drivers think it's a great idea and have been really keen to book their places on the course. The feedback we've received has been really positive. I have taken the course myself and it has changed some aspects of how I drive. I'm now more aware of my road positioning and feel better able to stay safe on the roads.

"I think it's excellent that Coloplast is providing this training for its staff. Figures show that 60 per cent of crashes involve a company car and Coloplast is doing everything it can to ensure that its drivers are safe on the roads, to reduce the possibility of accidents and increase driving skills and awareness."

Sam Sedwill, Coloplast's HR director, commented: "The safety and wellbeing of our staff is important to us at Coloplast and we are pleased to be able to provide this level of training. Many companies are cutting back on their training budgets but at Coloplast we remain dedicated to the personal development and wellbeing of our staff."

The course helps drivers to assess their road positioning, to read the road and the potential dangers ahead and looks at the risks involved in driving on different sorts of roads.
