Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern Ltd has won the highest award - the Sir George Earle Trophy - at this year's RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
The firm, which has its headquarters in Edinburgh, was presented with the trophy at a ceremony in Birmingham on Wednesday. It also won the Construction Industry Sector Award.
The RoSPA awards panel was particularly impressed with how the company was stepping up to the challenge of delivering the corporate Balfour Beatty goal of "zero harm" by 2012 and by the strong and creative approach developed by its senior management team.
The panel also noted the way in which foremen and supervisors were engaged in regular safety co-ordination meetings as well as in inspection and in the investigation of all incidents. It commended the way safety representatives were pulled into practical problem-solving activities and also the company's policy of valuing and acting on ideas from the workforce.
Tom Mullarkey, chief executive of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: "Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern has put down a solid benchmark for accident and ill health prevention that we hope other firms will strive to achieve. The company's overall approach to health and safety is not to punish or stigmatise, but to encourage behaviour change by entering into dialogue with workers and also by celebrating success. Being the recipient of this year's Sir George Earle Trophy is worthy of such celebration and we offer our congratulations to everyone at the firm, and indeed to all our award winners."
Bob Clark, managing director, Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern, said: "We are delighted to have received such a prestigious award as the Sir George Earle Trophy. The award recognises the ongoing effort, commitment and engagement of our employees in promoting a safe working culture."
This is the 55th year in which RoSPA, an accident prevention charity with a 94-year history, has presented awards for occupational health and safety management. With some entries still to be judged, the RoSPA Awards 2011, sponsored by NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), are on course to match last year's record-breaking total of more than 1,750 winners from the UK and overseas. Most of the winners were presented with their awards during three days of ceremonies at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel last week (May 17-19). An additional ceremony will be held in Glasgow in September.
The RoSPA Awards look not only at accident records, but also entrants' overarching health and safety management systems, recognising important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement. The majority of awards are non-competitive and are presented at a range of achievement levels. Competitive awards are presented in more than 20 sectors and specialist awards recognise excellence in specific areas.
A new award was introduced for 2011 - the SME Assistance Trophy, sponsored by BHSF - for the best contribution by a trade association or similar body assisting small and medium-sized firms with health and safety. It was won by the British Constructional Steelwork Association Ltd.
