There are some last minute places available at the RoSPA Scotland Safety and Health Forum taking place at the Hilton Glasgow next week. The event, which will focus on finding opportunities for accident and ill health prevention amid cuts and changes, will take place on Wednesday, September 21 - the day before the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
Forum delegates will explore current and future health and safety issues in the wider context of budget cuts by getting involved in interactive workshops, discussion groups and panel interviews - learning from each other as well as experts.
Karen McDonnell, head of RoSPA Scotland, said: "This event provides a valuable opportunity to learn how other firms have made the most of limited budgets, creating opportunities where there were problems. "In 2010-2011, there were 15 worker fatalities in Scotland. This is an all-time low, and Scottish businesses should be proud of that. However, everyone should be able to work in safety, so it would be wrong to take the focus off accident and ill health prevention in the workplace.
"The forum will particularly help those whose job it is to communicate the business case for health and safety in their workplace, enabling them to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, even when times are tough."
The event, sponsored by the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives, will open with a panel of experts taking part in a discussion entitled "A day in the life of health and safety: overcoming your operational challenges", which will provide solutions to real issues raised by delegates.
On the panel will be: Tim Clarke, divisional managing director, Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern - this year's winner of RoSPA's highest accolade, the Sir George Earle Trophy; Fraser Allan, head of health, safety, environment and quality, CBES; and Roger Bibbings, occupational safety adviser, RoSPA. A variety of workshops covering safety leadership, communication, and health and wellbeing will run throughout the day, with plenty of top tips and practical advice given by prominent Scottish health and safety professionals.
Case studies will focus on finding opportunities amid budget cuts and a genuine accident investigation, looking at how the accident happened and what it really cost.
