The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme has been announced as a finalist in two categories at the UK Event Awards 2011.

RoSPA's scheme, which is the largest and longest-running occupational safety awards programme in the UK, has made the shortlist in the Business to Business or Leisure/Consumer: Best Awards Scheme category and also in the Best Cause Related/Charity Event category. RoSPA, a safety charity with a 94-year history, will find out whether it has won the titles at an awards ceremony at Wembley Stadium on November 30.

The RoSPA Awards, which date back to 1956, are a key fixture in the health and safety calendar, offering organisations an unrivalled opportunity to prove their ongoing commitment to the prevention of accidents and ill health at work. They look not only at incident records, but also entrants' overarching health and safety management systems, including leadership and workforce involvement.

It was another record-breaking year in the scheme in 2011, with 1,770 organisations from the UK and around the world receiving certificates or trophies. Most of the winners were presented with their awards during three days of ceremonies and gala dinners, each seating nearly 1,000 people, at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel in May. There will be an additional ceremony and gala dinner at the Hilton Glasgow on September 22.

In addition to their size and longevity, the RoSPA Awards are remarkable because the entire process is managed in house by the safety charity's awards and events team, consisting of fewer than 10 people. Audio visual services are provided by Sound+Vision. And, because RoSPA is a charity, income generated by the awards is ploughed back into its mission to save lives and reduce injuries.

Julia Rolinson, event manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: "We are delighted to have made the shortlist in two categories at the UK Event Awards. We know the RoSPA Awards are already held in very high esteem but these nominations are a massive boost for our small team which works tirelessly from one year to the next to ensure the scheme continues to go from strength to strength.

"We are proud that all aspects of the RoSPA Awards - from launch, registration and judging to the staging of four presentation ceremonies - are managed by our in-house team, which also organises more than 20 other conferences and events each year for both RoSPA and external clients."

The entry process for the RoSPA Awards 2012 will open later this autumn.
