More than 150 businesses and organisations from Scotland have received honours in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011 in recognition of their approach to preventing accidents and ill health at work.

The winner of the top award for organisations based or operating in Scotland was Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish and Southern Ltd, which was presented with the RoSPA Scotland Trophy at a ceremony in Glasgow last night.

The award completes a hat-trick of trophies to be won by the firm in this year's RoSPA Awards; it was also presented with the Sir George Earle Trophy - RoSPA's most prestigious accolade - and the Construction Industry Sector Award at a ceremony in Birmingham in May. The RoSPA awards panel, which considered the firm's activities from 2010-11, was particularly impressed with how the company was stepping up to the challenge of delivering the corporate Balfour Beatty goal of "zero harm" by 2012.

Other highly performing organisations from Scotland were: Halcrow Group Ltd, of Glasgow, which won the Commercial and Business Services Sector Award; Coca Cola Enterprises Ltd - East Kilbride, which won the Food, Drink and Tobacco Manufacturing Industry Sector Award and a silver award for managing occupational road risk; UPM Tilhill, of Stirling, which won the Forestry Sector Award; Aramark - Offshore, of Dyce, which won the Hotel and Catering Industry Sector Award; FMC Technologies Ltd - Dunfermline, which was commended in the manufacturing industry sector; Expro International Group Limited, of Dyce, which was commended in the oil and gas industry sector; and Shell Gannet Alpha, of Aberdeen, which was also commended in the oil and gas industry sector.

The remaining Scottish organisations won non-competitive awards at a range of achievement levels.

Winning organisations from Scotland were joined by others from elsewhere in the UK and overseas at yesterday's ceremony and gala dinner at the Hilton Glasgow.

The RoSPA Awards, which date back to 1956, look not only at accident records, but also entrants' overarching health and safety management systems, recognising important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement. It was another record-breaking year in the scheme, with around 1,770 winning organisations in total.

The majority of RoSPA's awards are non-competitive, but there are also competitive trophies in more than 20 sectors and specialist awards, which recognise excellence in specific areas, such as the management of occupational road risk (MORR). A new award was introduced for 2011 - the SME Assistance Trophy, sponsored by BHSF - for the best contribution by a trade association or similar body assisting small and medium-sized firms with health and safety - and this was won by the British Constructional Steelwork Association Ltd.

Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA's chief executive, said: "RoSPA award winners from right across Scotland should be very proud of their achievements. Not only do our awards provide well-deserved recognition for the winners, but they also encourage other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention."

The RoSPA Awards 2011 were sponsored by NEBOSH - the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health.
