Sunquest Information Systems, Inc. ®, a leading provider of pathology information technology, announced that Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA has gone live with Sunquest CoPathPlus™ 5.0, a solution designed specifically to support the anatomic pathology laboratory's complex workflow and reporting needs.

The implementation was conducted as part of a 10-year collaboration agreement between Sunquest and MGH. MGH, the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is implementing the new and innovative Sunquest CoPath Plus 5.0 specimen management and tracking solution to automate management of anatomic pathology specimens, which will enable more efficient and accurate analysis, enhanced speed to diagnosis, and, ultimately, improved patient outcomes.

During the implementation, a team of Sunquest, MGH, and Partners HealthCare Information Systems specialists converted more than 20 years of anatomic pathology data, including over 2.4 million cases, 1.8 million unique tissue cassette numbers and 4.2 million unique slides numbers.

The implementation was the first time that large numbers of unique cassettes and slides were converted from a foreign system into CoPath Plus and could be recognized and processed in a version of CoPath Plus. Jim Noga, Vice President and CIO at Partners HealthCare, an integrated health system founded by Brigham and Women's Hospital and MGH, and most recently the MGH CIO, commented, "Barcoding and tracking specimens in the clinical and anatomic pathology workflow and inside the lab information systems have always been important for patient safety and for operational efficiency.

As the demand for pathology services continues to grow and testing, including molecular assays, becomes more complex, this type of technology will continue to be invaluable." "Sunquest CoPathPlus v5.0 has many exciting innovations to support our customers' need for workflow efficiency and safety," said Richard Atkin, Sunquest President and CEO. "The MGH conversion to CoPath Plus is but a first step in our 10 year partnership with Partners Healthcare and to our commitment to market leadership in anatomic pathology."

As a Founding Gold Sponsor of the Digital Pathology Association (DPA), a non-profit organization committed to creating standards for the adoption and use of digital imaging in the practice of pathology, Sunquest has demonstrated ongoing commitment to, and leadership in, the anatomic pathology market. Sunquest continues to work with its DPA partners to develop and deliver major advances in anatomic pathology workflow, specimen tracking, and usability.
