Surrey based IT support provider Barton Technology has launched a simple guide explaining some of the most commonly misunderstood IT terms in plain English. The document is free to download from the Barton Web site and can be found at www.barttech.co.uk/jargon-buster.
The jargon buster is intended to help make small businesses and SMEs more aware of the products and services available to them, irrespective of their provider. Barton Technology believes that the conventional IT support model is not transparent enough and can sometimes mislead customers, creating a bad reputation for the industry. The guide touches on hardware, software and licensing, networking, backup, server applications and security issues. It is often used by Barton Technology as the first document it sends to new clients to ensure that they understand anything the company's consultants say to them.
Barton Technology believes that this helps increase the level of confidence of its customers, because they are equipped with the basic knowledge they need to make suitable decisions. Dominic Jones, Barton Technology founder and managing director explains how the jargon buster came to exist: "For most SME's and small businesses, the IT world is a confusing place, filled with acronyms and lingo. Many business owners and managers find themselves unsure of what to choose and usually follow the advice of an IT sales rep who is most interested in up-selling and enhancing his commission.
"We've noticed that there are many issues that typical IT support clients would like learn about for themselves before making a decision. For example, people often confuse hard disk capacity and RAM memory, which is something clarified in the guide.
"We think this kind of initiative also helps customers plan for the additional capital equipment costs they might incur. In my view the best thing an IT solutions provider can do to gain the trust of its customers is offer unbiased and objective information," concluded Jones.
