IT may be a place where candidates tremble in the TV world of The Apprentice - but for IT communications specialist Remark Group, the boardroom has heralded a new business venture.
Leading charity Deafblind UK called in the communications experts to come up with a brief to redesign the boardroom at its Peterborough head office.
The challenge faced by Peterborough-based Remark included providing a hi-tech, multi-functional boardroom, used by people with a sight and hearing loss (some guided by guide dogs) alongside sighted hearing people.
Tim Prentice, Remark Group's systems engineer said: "The brief was very specific, and needed to be tailored to meet a wide range of cuttings edge technical requirements to suit use by a variety of people with different communication needs.
"As well as our own IT and telecommunications teams, we were also able to work with external companies to outsource some of the more specific items to meet the exact customer requirements."
The transformation of the now fully functional boardroom includes:
- A custom built, handmade wooden board room table, incorporating specially designed coloured wood around the edges to enable visually impaired people to feel the edges and corners.
- A mobile, interactive audiovisual cabinet that can be easily moved for use in other rooms
- Special height adjustable chairs
- Controllable lighting system
- Height adjustable presentation boards and projectors
- A touch tablet that gives a view of the projected image on a local 17" touch screen, enabling people with a sight and hearing loss to have full control from their seats.
Jo Johnson, marketing and communications manager at Deafblind UK said: " The development of the fully accessible boardroom has been made possible by a generous donation from a charitable trust.
"Remark Group have taken the specific brief we gave them and transformed the boardroom into a fully accessible and integrated space for our Board of Directors. Our staff team, including those who have a sight and hearing loss, are able to use the boardroom for meetings, presentations and conference calls and the space can also be used by other charities.
"We are extremely satisfied and pleased with the results of this project and have appreciated Remark Group's attention to detail and technical expertise.
