Crown Paints has secured a coveted Green Apple award for its pioneering approach to sustainability.
Representatives from the UK manufacturer travelled to the House of Commons to receive the award, which recognises the introduction of a sustainable revolution across the business.

The Green Apple award has been achieved following Crown Paints announcement earlier this year that it had developed a blueprint to cut its carbon output, following the introduction of ground-breaking technology.
In February, the company revealed its 'portfolio footprinting' tracker measurement system, launched at Ecobuild 2011, which charts the carbon footprint of every product Crown Paints makes, including the specification brands of Crown Trade, Sandtex Trade and Sadolin.

The system - developed with sustainability consultants Best Foot Forward - represented an industry first and now provides a clear and defined benchmark for the company to reduce its impact across all aspects of the business.
Featuring analysis including the impact up and down the supply chain, the software is producing sound data, which is being used by Crown Paints as a catalyst to drive down its own greenhouse gas emissions.
With the figure set to reduce by 10 per cent by 2015 - and 25 per cent by 2020 - the process delivers a clearly defined and transparent call to action across the business.

These two new targets are in addition to the company's existing Earthbalance sustainability targets of zero waste to landfill by December 2012.
Vernon Kinrade, Crown Paints' Specification Sector Support Manager, said: "We are delighted our work to date has already been recognised with the Green Apple award.

"Through our Earthbalance sustainability programme, we worked to reduce environmental impact across the board and our efforts over the last couple of years have already provided real and measurable improvements.
"However, the launch of the footprint tracker has given us an even greater focus, which is starting to drive a carbon revolution across our business.
"We are making decisions from an informed perspective, based on science, which in turn is enabling us to take the right action to reduce our carbon footprint.

"New standards in sustainable best practice are being delivered - without any impact on quality, and this gives a strong statement about the direction we are taking as a company.
"Our approach is not just to make one or two 'green' products. We want to be sustainability leaders and that is not about filling a market niche, it's about changing the way we do business.

"We pride ourselves on the performance of our paints. Specifiers and contractors benefit from the supply of UK-produced, high quality, time proven paints, which carry more than 200 years' experience in every can.
"It is our duty to continue to develop paints and varnishes that deliver a premium level of protection and durability, extending the life of the substrate and reducing the time needed between reapplication.
"Ultimately our approach to sustainability means this is being achieved with a holistic approach to carbon reduction and no impact on product quality."

The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour.
