Print giant HP have renewed their sponsorship of PrintIT!, an industry-wide educational initiative led by Proskills which encourages students to consider a career in print.

Already a long-term sponsor of PrintIT!, HP will contribute £5,000 in cash and £5,000 worth of prizes to the programme in 2012 - the Gold sponsorship package - demonstrating their commitment to the next generation of the workforce.

"It's great to be able to support the development and future of the print industry in this way," says the company's UK Marketing Manager Julia Cole. "PrintIT! introduces students to major design challenges and heightens awareness of the creative opportunities available in print, helping develop their industry skills and attract new entrants to the profession. This in turn better prepares the industry for emerging trends and helps build for the future."

The programme is mapped to the national curriculum and complements the GCSE courses in Product Design and Graphic Products, giving students further opportunities to exercise their creativity. Participating students produce a print and graphics-based campaign to promote Fairtrade products, requiring both technical knowledge and creativity; these attributes are highly valued by the print industry.

"In today's highly competitive marketplace we can't afford to stand still, so we're constantly on the lookout for the new ideas and innovative thinking that will underpin future development," explains Julia. "However, it's also important to combine creativity with an awareness of the marketplace and practical concerns like image resolution and size. These are issues that the PrintIT! programme helps address."

The programme has gone from strength to strength over recent years, with over 16,700 students from more than 350 schools registering to take part in 2011. With Proskills keen to expand PrintIT! further in 2012, Deputy CEO Tom Bowtell says they greatly value HP's support for the programme. "HP have been a loyal supporter of PrintIT! over the years and we are delighted to have them on board again," he says.

About PrintIT!
Launched in 2005, PrintIT! is an industry-wide educational initiative which aims to encourage young people to consider a career in print.
As part of the curriculum-based PrintIT! course, students are challenged to create a print-based campaign. Aiming to promote the many varied and stimulating career paths available within the print industry, the PrintIT! competition was extended in 2008 to include Year 9 students (aged 13-14) as well as Year 10 students (aged 14-15) studying for their GCSEs in Product Design and Graphic Products. New for 2011 - PrintIT! is now also mapped to GCSE and A level Media Studies.
PrintIT! is also relevant to the Diplomas in Creative and Media and Manufacturing and Product Design. PrintIT! is led by Proskills UK, the sector skills council representing the print and paper industries.
