The quality of entries to PrintIT! Scotland, an educational initiative which aims to encourage students to consider a career in the print and paper industries, points to a bright future for companies ready to engage with emerging talent. Proskills, the Sector Skills Council behind PrintIT! Scotland, has received hundreds of entries from across the country, demonstrating both creativity and technical understanding.

The judges have come up with a shortlist of finalists in each of the five categories: Best Wall Poster, Best Graph and Chart, Best Table Talker, Best Use of Fair-Trade Brand Across the Range and finally Best Design Process. Among the finalists are students from Inverness Royal Academy, Uddingston Grammar, Kinross High School, Gracemount High School in Edinburgh and Alford Academy, competing for a range of print-related prizes for both themselves and their schools.

The finalists will be competing for a range of print-related prizes for both themselves and their schools, which will help teachers engage their students in the major challenges facing the print industry and demonstrate the scope it offers for individual creativity. The competition was judged by Mark Burns and Stephen Mather of City of Glasgow College, and Janette McAllister of Montgomery Litho Group, illustrating its wider importance.

The PrintIT! Scotland programme is tailored specifically for the Scottish educational system and is designed to help Graphic Communication Standard Grade and Intermediate levels 1 & 2 students develop their creative skills. Students are asked to produce a print-based campaign to promote Fairtrade products, giving them a solid grounding in the skills relevant to the print industry.

With the workforce ageing rapidly, attracting talented new entrants is crucial to the future of the print industry. By showing students just how exciting the print industry can be, and heightening awareness of the career opportunities available, PrintIT! Scotland is helping print companies build for the future.
