The 2011 Proskills Awards will be held at Alton Towers on 3 November, both celebrating the achievements of people working in the process and manufacturing sector and also highlighting its wider commercial importance. Proskills has received entries from a wide range of employers and apprentices in the print and paper industry, revealing a shared commitment to developing the skills that will drive the sector forward. Among the finalists at the Proskills Awards are:
Apprentice of the Year: Phoebe Stockdale (KallKwik)
Outstanding Learner of the Year: Claire Louise Jones (DS Smith Packaging)
Outstanding Union Learning Representative of the Year: Julia Harrison (James Cropper) and Alan Alcock (Smurfit Kappa)
Effective training is crucial to helping companies adapt to commercial change. The skills and abilities of the workforce represent the lifeblood of a business, and while investing in training clearly leads to short-term costs, in the long-term it brings real benefits to both the employee and the company. By working together and developing as a team, companies can tap into a vast resource - a person's potential - that when properly channelled adds real value to a business.
Since starting her apprenticeship at Business Design and Print network Kall Kwik in Crawley in 2008 Phoebe Stockdale has developed her professional skills and learnt a great deal about the company's pre-press and creative section. These skills have helped her make a positive impact on the performance of the business. "Phoebe has been instrumental in maximising the hardware's capabilities within the branch and because of her attention to detail, she minimises costs and maximises profits," said Barry Cool, Phoebe's Manager at KallKwik.
By highlighting the wider importance of vocational learning programmes the awards ceremony will encourage more companies to take advantage of the support available for training and help the print and paper industries build for the future.
