The 2011 Proskills Awards will be held at Alton Towers on 3 November, both celebrating the achievements of companies in the process and manufacturing sector and also highlighting its wider commercial importance. Proskills has received hundreds of entries from a wide range of employers, learners, apprentices and training providers, demonstrating how vocational training programmes can help companies develop the skills they need to deal with emerging business needs.

Effective training is a cornerstone of Schueco's commitment to quality, an approach which has led to their nomination in the Outstanding Employer of the Year category. "Training of all types and levels has always been available to any member of staff, from warehouseman to members of the Executive management team," said Marc von Briel, the company's Managing Director. "Topics have varied from the technical aspects of Schueco products, Specialist/bespoke software training, Microsoft Office training and soft skills such as stress management, customer service and manual handling."

Ensuring that the workforce are fully trained in these areas and able to support the wide variety of technical systems supported by Schueco UK Ltd gives employees the chance to progress. This in turn brings real benefits to the company. "Two individuals have risen from the warehouse to become part of the Schueco UK Ltd external sales force, considered the crème-de-la-crème in the industry. Other advantages are the high level of customer support we are able to provide in the sales and procurement departments and technical support," outlined Marc.

The company's commitment to training has also brought other benefits. "Morale has improved because people who have developed their skills feel empowered, motivation has increased and staff retention has improved significantly. Improvements in the company over the past five years have been significant; this can be attributed to the development of its employees, who now have the confidence and support to offer suggestions as to how they see the business progressing in future."

This success will make Schueco a strong contender at the Proskills awards ceremony, which promises to be a hugely enjoyable evening that will highlight the work of both individuals and companies in the process and manufacturing sector, while also offering important networking and sponsorship opportunities.
