Leading manufacturer of polythene films for industrial packaging applications, British Polythene Industries is reporting good progress with a £7m investment project at its Ardeer site.

The business, which offers products such as pallet stretch hoods and heavy duty sacks through its bpi.industrial division, commissioned the project in September 2009 with a view to shaping its Ardeer factory into one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Europe.

Part funded by a Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) grant from the Scottish Government, the massive project will see the construction of two new extrusion halls in order to house several lines being transferred from the BPI's Stockton site as well as a brand new, state-of-the-art wide film line.

Once operational, this additional wide film line will add to the manufacturer's already impressive production capacity and capabilities. It will allow higher volumes of wide film products to be produced in less time whilst also enabling BPI to extend its range by exploiting the latest innovations in wide film production technology.

With the 12-month investment project now just under halfway through, BPI confirms that work is progressing as planned. One of the new extrusion halls has already been completed and the other is currently under construction. A number of the new lines are also in place and are either up and running or in the process of being commissioned.

Commenting on the project's progress, John Langlands, CEO British Polythene Industries said: "The investment at our Ardeer facility isn't just great news for BPI, but also more importantly for our customers. It will enable us to build on our established range and to offer these products with greater speed, efficiency and quality assurances than ever before.

"With all this in mind, we're delighted that work is progressing as planned and that we look set to meet our own projected timescales."

The £7m project at Ardeer follows a previous investment by BPI of almost £5m into the site. This project, completed in 2009, saw the construction of a new warehouse and the addition of a back seam conversion line which is used by BPI to produce high performance packaging for sectors like the cement industry and pet food.
