Companies in the East Midlands which deal in packaging or have concerns about packaging and materials are being invited to attend a series of workshops at Nottingham Trent University.

Professor Tom Fisher, professor of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University, and Janet Shipton, divisional design and development director at Chesapeake Branded Packaging - who are authors of 'Designing for Re-Use: The Life of Consumer Packaging' - will delve into the complexities surrounding sustainable packaging and the effect this has on future business activity.

The free workshops are part of the university's Future Factory project, which supports East Midlands' SMEs in adopting new products, services and business practices which 'design out' unnecessary or unsustainable materials and processing, and 'design in' features such as environmentally neutral technologies and materials, recyclability and sensitive disposal.

Professor Tom Fisher said: "We're working in partnership with Future Factory to help businesses define their approach to these issues, formulate a plan and facilitate change."

The workshops are designed to run as a series but participants are welcome to enrol for just one of them.

19 March 2010 - Unwrapping Preconceptions; introductory workshop investigating the concept of sustainable packaging

28 May 2010 - Wrapping sustainability; insight into presenting products in the context of consumer expectation and behaviour

25 June 2010 - My other box is recyclable; a swap-shop of ideas where the audience are invited to bring along their packaging for scrutiny

To secure a place on any or all of these events please contact Angela Scott, Future Factory coordinator via futurefactory@ntu.ac.uk or tel: 0115 848 8675

Future Factory is part funded by the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), managed by East Midlands Development Agency (emda).
