Weightmans advises on packaging acquisition
Corporate lawyers at national law firm Weightmans LLP have advised on an acquisition that is estimated to add approximately $10 million in annual sales to its client's business.
The team at Weightmans advised client Sonoco UK Ltd - a wholly owned subsidiary of Sonoco, one of the largest diversified global packaging companies and the world's largest producer of paperboard cans - on the acquisition of the assets of Robinson Paperboard Packaging Ltd, a division of Robinson PLC based in Chesterfield.
Partner and head of corporate Paul Raftery led the team at Weightmans, comprising corporate associate and solicitor Lynne Rathbone and Anna Kerrane, employment associate Lee Rogers, property partner Andrea Steventon and pensions consultant Roderick Ramage.
Paul Raftery said of the deal:
"Weightmans has been advising Sonoco Consumer Products in the UK for some time now, but this was the first acquisition that we have undertaken for them. The transaction illustrates the depth of resource and range of skills which we can now offer within the enlarged corporate team at Weightmans following our recent merger with Mace & Jones.
"The purchase of Robinson Paperboard Packaging is a good strategic fit for Sonoco and our team provided legal advice across a broad spectrum of areas including corporate, employment, property and pensions."
Sean Cairns, General Manager Europe, Consumer Products Division, Sonoco said:
"Weightmans offered us the depth of resource and capability that we needed for the acquisition. We were delighted with the way they project led the transaction for us and which gave us the confidence that a seamless team was working for us. Their relaxed personal approach was an added bonus during times when issues flared up or when late night negotiation was called for. It was important to us that their team based culture mirrored our own ethos which it clearly did.
"We believe Robinson's proven expertise in innovative paper bottom technology and unique, patented processes provides a strong platform for our continued development and growth in the United Kingdom and Europe."
Cairns added:
"This agreement is a win for Robinson, Sonoco and our packaging customers, who are increasingly recognising the proven advantages that rigid paper containers bring in terms of reducing costs and minimising the impact on the environment - without compromising quality. Packaging made from rigid paper reduces package weight, makes more efficient use of raw materials and conserves energy."
