Thousands of people endure misery and endless discomfort as they struggle to cope with intimate healthcare issues.
A recent international survey of people with intimate healthcare issues revealed that six out of ten people with stomas have difficulties attaching an ostomy bag securely.
Over half of those who have lived with an ostomy for five years or more still have leakage, skin irritations and other problems which restrict and often prevent people from doing everyday things that other people take for granted.
The problems are not just physical. One person in three with a stoma suffers in silence because they are unable to mention or discuss their problems with anyone. The survey uncovered feelings of insecurity as well as social and psychological impacts.
Many problems experienced by people living with a stoma are caused by difficulties in fitting an ostomy bag securely to their skin. People with scarring, uneven skin surfaces and other body-fit issues usually find this even harder and more stressful than others without these conditions.
Now a new product is available which offers renewed hope to those who have suffered years of physical and emotional distress. The new SenSura Mio ostomy bag - a breakthrough innovation from medical devices company Coloplast - features an elastic adhesive, designed to improve body fit and reduce leakage.
Combining elasticity with the benefits of modern stoma care adhesives has created a stoma solution that is flexible and adaptable to individual bodies and circumstances. The adhesive ensures a secure fit between the bag and the stomach even where there are skin folds or scarring.
Tests involving hundreds of people in five European countries have been overwhelmingly positive with 87 per cent of users finding it easier to fit securely to their skin. Almost as many, 84 per cent, are pleased with the way the bag performs.
The tests took place in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Almost 150 stoma care nurses were involved and 97 per cent say that SenSura Mio provides a 'good' or 'excellent' fit to the users' peristomal skin.
In the UK alone, 97 per cent of stoma product users who took part in the trials agree that it fits 'very well' (76 per cent) or 'well' (21 per cent) with 87 per cent of them 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied'.
Coloplast believes the new ostomy bag is a major breakthrough for some of the issues experienced by people who have found it hard to cope.
Market manager Natalie Lipscombe said: "SenSura Mio offers a potentially life-changing solution to some of these issues. What makes this so different is that the elastic base plate maintains a secure fit between the ostomy bag and the stomach, regardless of the body shape or type.
"This offers a solution to intimate, everyday challenges. It can restore confidence and provide reassurance. Above all, it can give people an opportunity to enjoy life to the full again."
