Peterborough-based medical devices company Coloplast believes in recognising and rewarding the hard work and dedication of its staff. As a recent award announcement has shown, it appreciates the efforts of all those it works with, not just its employees.
Coloplast gives awards for PRIDE - personal responsibility in delivering excellence - to staff that have gone the extra mile in the pursuit of excellence in the workplace. These awards are usually only given to Coloplast staff so imagine his surprise when chef manager Duncan Town - who works for Coloplast's catering service provider T(n)S Catering - was announced as the latest PRIDE award winner.
Duncan explained: "There was a company update underway but as I'm not usually involved in them I was busy preparing lunch. I was called into the meeting under false pretences, they said I was needed to talk about a new fruit initiative Coloplast was launching. When I was in the meeting general manager Sue Kernahan began talking about the PRIDE award, about how someone had taken it upon themselves to make improvements which were being noticed and talked about around the office. I was looking round the room, wondering who had won it.
"When Sue announced it was me that had won the award I was shocked. It's an employee award, so for Coloplast to think highly enough of the work I do and of the changes I've made to the restaurant to give me one of the awards, I was very flattered and very surprised.
"I told Sue I was accepting the award on behalf of my team - it may have been my ideas but it's not just me that's done the work, Julie, Matilda and Patricia are also to thank for making it happen."
Duncan had worked at the Coloplast distribution centre in Peterborough for around six years when the previous chef manager at the company's head office moved on to a different job. Duncan was invited to move over to the head office and, since joining in May this year, has made lots of positive changes to the office restaurant.
Previously there were three choices every day, food is now offered as a buffet with different sized plates to suit different appetites. The salad bar has been given a total make-over with cosmetic changes as well as a complete range of new recipes, with the recipe book on display so people can see what is in each salad. Employees can also enjoy fresh juices or smoothies as part of Coloplast's wellbeing campaign.
Sam Sedwill, HR director at Coloplast, commented: "Duncan has made such a difference to the restaurant and not just with the changes to the menu. He's changed the atmosphere, brightened it up and made it a real talking point.
"We usually only give PRIDE awards to staff that have taken it upon themselves to go beyond what was expected of them. He may not be a Coloplast employee but Duncan has made such a difference to the restaurant, he has done more than anyone expected of him and is very deserving of the award."
