Employees at Peterborough-based medical devices company Coloplast have just returned from a two-day Olympic-themed sales and marketing training event which saw them working with medal winning athletes Roger Black and Steve Backley.
Coloplast first engaged the Olympians last month when they helped to launch Coloplast's new leadership principles. A month on, those principles were explored further at a training event in Stratford-upon-Avon at which Coloplast's sales and marketing teams learnt how to apply the new principles to their day-to-day responsibilities.
At the event Steve and Roger worked with Coloplast employees to focus on delivering their personal best and explained the importance of keeping momentum going even once you have achieved your goals.
Sam Sedwill, HR director at Coloplast, recalls: "Steve talked about how his goal was to become the best javelin thrower in the world. He achieved his goal, then he sat back and relaxed. When he saw others with the same goal creeping up hot on his heels he tried to get the momentum going but, by then, it was too late, injury had crept in and he was losing confidence. By using discipline, focus and hard work he returned to his rightful place as number one in the world.
"At Coloplast we are constantly pushing the goals - we don't just want to be great, we want to be the greatest. If it was the Olympics, we would be looking to win gold. By bringing Steve and Roger on board we have given ourselves the best chance at winning that medal, of becoming the greatest medical devices company in the world."
The positive feedback from the event has shown just what an effect the Olympians' presence had.
One employee said: "I have always been well aware that I am lucky enough to work for a great company, events like this reinforce that, making me even more proud and determined to help us move from great to greatest. My work engine is running and my sights are firmly focussed on achieving my personal best."
Sam Sedwill explains the reason behind it all: "With the Olympics approaching and with Coloplast's goal of going from good to great to greatest, we felt that by bringing Olympians on board we could really get the staff motivated and inspired to, essentially, create our own world record.
"Our aim of becoming the greatest medical devices company in the world is achievable if we all work together, work to the best of our abilities and have trust in the team around us. Steve and Roger know how to achieve their personal best, they were the greatest in their fields and we aim to be the greatest in ours."
