Material recovery expert Palm Recycling, in partnership with Ryedale District Council, has opened a new transfer facility in Malton, North Yorkshire.

The depot, which has now officially opened, will receive paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and card, kerbside collected from the areas' 50,000+ residents, from where it will be received, handled and bulk transferred for use as quality recyclate.

The three-year contract presents a number of opportunities and benefits for the Council, including the potential to make significant savings from fewer driven collection miles - with the benefits of lower fuel cost - as the new depot is located adjacent to the Council's own depot. Additionally there will be efficiency savings through reduced collection times.

Most significantly, through the partnership with Palm Recycling, the Council will have gained a valuable revenue stream as well as a sustainable end-market, for the materials collected.

Speaking about the partnership, Councillor Mrs Linda Cowling, chairman of Ryedale District Council's Commissioning Board, said: "We are delighted to be working with one of the big materials recovery companies; the deal provides us with a convenient drop-off point for the collected materials, which has many environmental benefits and the Authority gains an important source of income."

"The partnership represents investment by Palm Recycling to the North Yorkshire area, where we are already very active. It is a pleasure to be working with Ryedale District Council, helping it achieve greater levels of recycling, and the benefits this brings, socially, economically and environmentally," said Ross Johnstone, Business Manager, Palm Recycling.
