Palm Recycling has won a contract with Lincolnshire-based Mortons Print Limited for the collection and delivery of its waste newsprint to the Palm Paper mill in Kings Lynn. The contract included a £50,000 investment by Palm Recycling for the installation of innovative recycling systems and equipment, which optimise collections, reduce costs and increase overall revenues.

The solutions-based approach involved Palm Recycling working in partnership with Mortons to deliver a tailored and cost-effective system that directly met the company's needs and improved recycling rates. Specifically, the system introduced innovative methods that improve recycling through the segregation of waste, which additionally reduces the level of manual handling required and therefore further reducing costs.

Richard Waterson, commercial & marketing manager, Palm Recycling, said: "With levels of production increasing at Mortons, Palm Recycling was asked to propose a solution to improve recovered paper rates, increase revenues and introduce greater levels of automation. Our answer was to deliver a bespoke management system that allowed Palm Recycling to handle all of Mortons recycling requirements including a quality automated system that is fully maintained and serviced. This provides Mortons with an end-to-end solution with maintenance and service included for total peace of mind, allowing Mortons to focus on core business, which is printing!"

Ian Fisher, chief executive, Mortons of Horncastle Ltd, added: "Having been a long-standing customer of Palm Paper's high quality recycled newsprint, this partnership seemed the obvious choice especially with the advice and flexibility Palm Recycling offers."

Richard concluded: "With over 55% of recovered newsprint exported from the UK, this contract is great news as the recovered fibre will remain in the UK supply chain supporting British industry."

Since the contract commenced it is estimated that 1,000 tonnes pa of recovered fibre will be collected from Mortons and transferred to Palm's state-of-the-art mill where it will be reprocessed into fresh newsprint for the cycle to start over.
