Palm Recycling, in partnership with Hull City Council, has set up a complete Bring Bank management system that not only rationalises the existing community bring-site facilities to a more sustainable number, but also delivers key cost-savings and environmental benefits.

Central to the success of the new contract is Palm Recycling's replacement of individual banks with mixed fibre banks - taking both paper and cardboard; mixed container banks - taking plastics, glass bottles and cans; and a separate bank for textiles. The dual stream banks route reduces the number of banks required on-site whilst encouraging greater recycling with Hull residents now able to recycle a far greater range of materials.

With fewer sites and mixed materials, the number of collections and vehicle miles is reduced delivering a significant CO2 and fuel-cost saving whilst improving recycling and introducing a level of uniformity to the 22 sites.

Ross Johnstone, Business Manager, Palm Recycling, said: "We worked closely with Hull City Council to ensure that the need to reduce the number of sites and collections did not impact on recycling rates and the bank management system we have established ensures this. It's a good system for every one; it saves money, increases recycling rates and delivers measurable environmental benefits too. Even the banks we have installed are more aesthetically pleasing, which is important for local community acceptance."

Councillor Mancey, Portfolio Holder for the Environment & Transport, & Emergency Planning, Hull City Council, said: "Schools and voluntary organisations across the city have played a huge role helping to make community recycling so successful. The new arrangement with Palm Recycling increases our community recycling options and should enable us to further improve recycling levels above our 45% target."
