Bilco (ww.bilcouk.com) has become the first manufacturer of roof hatches which pass the revised requirements of the Florida Building Code.
The Florida Building Code was revised in 1992 following hurricane Andrew. In 2007 roof hatches were added to the list of products that are required to be tested to high velocity hurricane zone standards.
Bilco subjected four of its most popular roof hatches to a battery of tests and all four units survived impressively well. These Bilco products are the only roof hatches to have received Notice of Approval (NOA) in the State of Florida, which signifies full compliance with the Florida Building Code.
James Fisher, general manager of Bilco in the UK, commented: "The tests the roof hatches underwent were designed specifically to replicate hurricane conditions and we are proud to say that they stood up to the challenge.
"High wind loads - though not necessarily of hurricane force - should also be considered when planning any building works here in the UK. While the same tests are not required for our products in the UK, they are tested to EN Standards including those for weathertightness.
"It is vital that our products can withstand the extremes of the weather and the results of these tests show that our customers - wherever they are in the world - can rely on Bilco products."
The weather tight performance of Bilco's roof hatches has been independently verified by tests at Taylor Woodrow's technology centre in Bedfordshire. Bilco can provide full test results for inclusion in building documentation.
