An innovative lightweight and low-profile photovoltaic system for new and refurbished flat roofs that is capable of generating electricity in lower levels of light than rigid cell systems has been launched by leading building membranes specialist Icopal.
The development of flexible thin film PV laminates enables Icopal's roofing systems to harness en-ergy from unutilised roof space - up to 50Kw per annum from one square metre of the IcoSun sys-tem (based on UK average conditions) - and maximise the Government's new feed-in tariffs* in a discreet and secure method.
The IcoSun system from Icopal's Eco-Activ range comprises photovoltaic laminates (PVL) that weight less than 5kg/m² that are bonded directly to the waterproofing membrane without the need for supporting framework that would lead to imposed roof loading and water ingress through pene-trations.
The modules' flexible laminate technology enable them to follow the shape of the roof, even barrel roofs and pitched roofs up to 40º, while their multi-layer cell design allows them to work more effi-ciently at lower light levels without the need for them to be orientated towards the sub. They are also less affected by fluctuations in temperature than rigid cell systems.
The Icopal waterproofing membrane that is installed first comprises a polyolefine and bitumen compound (POCB) with a complex, dimensionally-stable polyester/glass reinforcement, providing high mechanical resistance and stability.
The smooth upper surface of this allows for optimum bonding of the PVL modules, with systems supplied as a single layer or two-layered built-up as required by the waterproofing requirements.
The PVL module, which has a self-adhesive underside, is bonded to the waterproofing membrane as a secondary operation, negating the need for the contractor to work over the top of the PVL modules and therefore minimising the risk of damage.
As well as offering a 20-year warranty on power output at 80%, Icopal can advise specifiers on the design of the system to eliminate ponding water, maximise the modules' self-cleaning properties, avoid shaded areas caused by nearby buildings or trees, chimneys, upstands and so on, and the return on investment based on the usable roof space.
The IcoSun system includes accessories such as base channels, raceways, mastic, primer and glue. Two runs of 0.4m wide IcoSun will fit per width of 1m wide IcoSun waterproofing.
* Feed-in tariffs (FITs) are payment made by the licensed electricity suppliers to the generators of electricity from such sources as IcoSun, to incentivise small-scale, low-carbon electricity genera-tion by householders, communities and businesses.
